“A True Story As I Heard It” Gladys Coggswell DVD

Sam & Livy Clemens and their children spent summers at Quarry Farm in Elmira, New York. Quarry Farm was the home of Theodore and Susan Crane (Livy's sister), and this is where Clemens wrote many of his greatest works before returning to the family's mansion in Hartford, Connecticut where he would continue writing and editing. One summer evening, Mary Ann Cord, a servant at Quarry Farm, joined the family on the porch as was the custom. At the sight of her smiling face, Mr. Clemens asked, "...how is it that you've lived sixty years and never had any trouble?" "Auntie Cord" responded, and Clemens put her story to paper, calling her "Aunt Rachel" in the published account. The Mark Twain Museum engaged Gladys Coggswell to interpret the role of "Aunt Rachel" for this personal recollection of a family torn apart at the slave auction. Curator Henry Sweets provides historical context. In color. Running time: 22:50 Booklist Review: "Museum curator Henry Sweet introduces background material regarding a Mark Twain story, placing events in historical context. While relaxing on the front porch of Quarry Farm in Elmira, New York (where Twain and family spent many summers), the writer asked servant Mary Ann Cord, “How is it that you’ve lived 60 years and never had any trouble?” Twain turned Cord’s heartfelt response into a story for Atlantic Monthly. Shot inside the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum, this program features storyteller Gladys Coggswell passionately interpreting the tale as told by “Aunt Rachel” (a fictional name ascribed by Twain) who recounts she had plenty of troubles, including being dragged to a slave auction and watching her husband and children sold into slavery. Aunt Rachel becomes a cook for Union soldiers and when a black regiment arrives, she recognizes one of the soliders as her youngest son and the two are reunited. Coggswell’s convincing portrayal of the former slave will enrapture audiences." — Candace Smith
